Dear Parents/Guardians of Incoming Kindergarten Students,
Summertime is a wonderful time to relax and have fun! It is also a time to lose oneself in the pages of a good book! Reading aloud to your child is not only a great bonding experience, but it develops good reading skills and encourages children to become life-long learners. With this goal in mind, St. Veronica School expects all students to participate in an age-appropriate, summer reading program designed to build your child’s reading readiness skills that will better prepare them for Kindergarten in September.
We have set a goal for 100% participation for all incoming Kindergarten students. Below, you will find one FICTION and one NON-FICTION book that is required of you to read with your child. Depending on your child’s individual reading readiness and ability, this could mean listening to a parent read the book aloud, having the child look at and tell about the pictures, or identifying words that the child can read independently. You know best what your child is capable of and the extent to which you would like to challenge them is up to you. The important thing is that each child participates in the activity.
Also, you will find attached a Reading Log that you can complete with your child. In addition to the required reading, I encourage you to allow your child to pick out books and stories on their own to “read” throughout the summer months. Reading, and reading often, will not only develop better communication skills, but completing the log will offer your child a sense of accomplishment!
As you know, learning never stops! Reading books about places your child visits, animals they love, and activities they enjoy is a wonderful way to enrich their summer vacation!
Have a safe, fun-filled summer and looking forward to seeing you in September!
